| Great Buildings were a
part of the emerging Los Angeles music scene in the late 1970s.
Acts like The Go-Gos, Cheap Trick, The Runaways, Ramones,
Blondie, Van Halen and many others were bringing rock, punk, and new
wave to the LA clubs like The Whiskey A Go Go, The Starwood, and Madame
Wongs. One of the most influential of these bands was The Quick. But
when the Quick split up, lead singer Danny Wilde and bassist Ian
Ainsworth decided to start their own power pop band. They recruited
Phil Solem as the lead guiarist and Richard Sanford on drums, and Great
Buildings was born. From May of 1978 through the early 1980s, Great Buildings primarily played the LA clubs, in addition to touring up and down the West Coast (followed by their fans, the Buildingettes.) In 1981, the band was signed by CBS and released the album APART FROM THE CROWD. A critcial and cult favorite to this day, the album failed to chart despite the catchy single 'Hold On To Something' and the mainstream rock single 'Maybe It's' You. Great Buildings recorded another album of new material, later to be titled EXTRA EPIC EVERYTHING, but by late 1982, the band split up. Danny Wilde pursued a solo career in the 1980s and eventually teamed up again with Solem in 1990 to form The Rembrandts. The duo scored the smash hits 'Just The Way It Is, Baby' and 'I'll Be There For You'. By 2010, both Great Buildings albums were released on CD by Wounded Bird Records. |
